Welcome to At-Bristol’s website focussing on foods and flavours from around the world.

This website introduces you to some of the food plants to be found in the botanical houses of Wildwalk-At-Bristol and demonstrates uses in our own culture and in the cultures of their origin. Consider how these different cultural uses have been adapted and discover modern Britain’s relation to the natural world of its incoming cultures.

Flavours and Spices

What do vanilla, sugar cane and black pepper all have in common? They have all been grown in Wildwalk! Find out more about some of the plants in Wildwalk which can be used for food can be directly linked to community use and our inherited use through trading links with West Indies, Africa and Asia; this includes the banana plant, coconut, jack fruit, passion fruit, pineapple, rice, sugar cane and coffee.

Discover how food and drink from around the world have influenced our local culture including growing plants for foods and for medicinal and religious use.

We are fortunate to have such a wide choice of foods that have become commonplace in our own shops and supermarkets. Restaurants and chefs from other part of the world who have come to Britain have helped to add to this choice by introducing foods from their original cultures into our everyday diets.

People

People from all over the world have had influences on the botany, horticulture, food availability and more in Britain. This section contains interviewes from a number of people from the local community and has some great stories and recipes that are used by chefs from different parts of Bristol.
